Colonel Jack's ranch on the river

The community is named for John D. Henderson, known as Colonel Jack. He opened a ranch, trading post and hotel on Henderson Island in 1859, which Commerce City's history page calls the first permanent settlement in the South Platte River Valley. Today the Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds occupy that site.

A few older buildings still stand along Brighton Road north of 120th Avenue, and the Henderson Community Church has stood for over a century. Around them, newer homes have filled in the former fields.

Whose pipe, whose service area

Henderson has no city hall of its own. Over time, Commerce City, Brighton and Thornton have each annexed pieces of the area, so neighbors on the same road may pay different utilities. The South Adams County district runs its Williams Monaco wastewater plant at 9702 Monaco Street, right in Henderson.

The district says it maintains the sewer mains and that owners can have problems inside their private sewer lines. If sewage backs up, call the district at once so staff can check whether the main is blocked, then call a plumber for the line on your side.

ZIP code coverage

Emergency help by ZIP code in Henderson

Looking for an emergency plumber in 80640? Callers from these ZIP codes reach the same 24/7 number. The list is a rough guide and does not promise coverage. Henderson is a small post office area, so many nearby addresses use Commerce City, Brighton or Thornton ZIP codes. A full street address clears it up.

Wells, septic and rural lots

Some Henderson properties sit outside city lines and may use a private well or a septic system. Those homes have their own failure points: a pressure tank that cycles, a pump that loses prime, a leach field that goes soggy.

Describe your setup when you call. The dispatcher can say whether a contractor works on that kind of system at your address.

Cold ground and exposed lines

Denver's average first freeze is October 7, and the river plain north of the city sees the same season. Outdoor spigots, long yard lines and barn or shop hydrants are the first things to freeze.

If a line outside has frozen, shut off the water to it at the source before it thaws, so a split pipe does not flood the building. Our burst pipe repair page lists the first steps.

Farms, shops and light industry

Alongside homes, the area holds cold storage and other businesses. Floor drains, large water heaters and backflow assemblies on commercial lines have their own rules.

Our commercial plumbing page explains how that work differs from a house call, including why many utilities require a yearly backflow test on commercial devices.

Quick answers

Henderson plumbing questions

It depends on where the lot sits, since three cities have annexed pieces of Henderson. The water bill is the quickest way to find out.

The South Adams County district says it maintains sewer mains and will not service utilities on private property, which leaves private lines with the owner. For other utilities, ask the provider that bills you.

Say so on the call and the dispatcher will check whether a contractor covers well and pressure tank work at your address.

Shut off the water at the main or at the source for that line, open a nearby faucet, and call. Do not use an open flame to thaw it.

Yes. Someone takes the call at any hour, holidays included. Give the address and describe the problem, and a nearby contractor is contacted; that contractor's own calendar sets the arrival time.

These ZIP codes ring the same number. Whether a contractor can reach you turns on your exact address, so confirm it during the call.
